About our Junior Band

Our Junior Band is not just the stepping stone between our Training band and Youth Band, it is very much a band in its own right with a full calendar of contest and jobs to prepare for. There are now approximately 30 players in the band currently with an age range from 9 to 14 years old.

Rehearsals often start with sectional sessions to help the players really get to grips with the technical challenges of the music they are practising. The band has played at many school and community events such as on South Park bandstand in Macclesfield as well performing at our regular Christmas and Summer concerts with the whole organisation.

The Junior Band has a fantastic record of achievement in contests and competitions winning at the Newcastle-under-Lyme music festival for the last 6 consecutive years. They have also competed at Bolsover contest and will be participating in the National Youth Brass Band Championships at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2012.

Musical Director Cheryl Slamon

Cheryl started to play euphonium at Chapel-en-le-Frith school where she joined the school band and Whaley Bridge Junior band for 4 years before changing to tenor horn when a place in Whaley Bridge senior band became available. Whilst at school she entered local slow melody contests and gained various awards as a soloist and as part of quartets, gained a place in the Derbyshire Youth Brass Band for two years and regularly played with the High Peak Youth Wind band.

After leaving school she continued to play with Whaley Bridge band for a further 10 years before joining the newly formed Silk Brass where she played baritone for 5 years. After  taking a break  she decided to channel her enthusiasm into helping young people learn to play. Originally, her idea was to just turn up to South East Cheshire Youth Band and do some pointing for those who couldn’t read the music very well. This didn’t last long as under the influence of our very own Louise, she became more involved and started to conduct the junior section. The rest, as they say, is history. She was was part of the new venture to start up Macclesfield Youth Brass Band and is also a trustee.
